What's in a Voice?
The impression that our voice makes on others can be powerful! It takes only seconds for listeners to judge a voice, and that others don't seem to listen when we speak may be because of how our voices sound rather than because of what we've said. A monotone voice will lull listeners to distraction, a loud voice can be irritating; some voices are harsh and grating, while others have an alluring depth and resonance.
A voice is susceptible to strain. Some environments -- like a noisy restaurant -- are stressful to the voice, as are some professions. Recent research has shown that teachers -- speaking all day long above the voices of exuberant children - tend to have voice problems. People whose work involves a lot of telephone communication may find their voice hoarse by day's end.
Our voices are instruments that tell others much about ourselves.,
communicating our self-confidence or our self-doubt. And interestingly, by changing the way we sound, we can help to change the way we feel! Just as a new hair style can give us a much needed boost, so can improving the sound of our voice empower us -- not just to impress others, but even more importantly, to feel more confident in ourselves.
